BARRIE CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR William Gargan, who also played the better known television (and radio) detective Martin Kane, was the voice of New York eye Barrie Craig while Ralph Bell portrayed his associate, Lt. Travis Rogers. Craig's office was on Madison Avenue and his adventures were fairly standard PI fare. He worked alone, solved cases efficiently, and feared no man. As the promos went, he was "your man when you can't go to the cops. Confidentiality a specialty." This...

(111 Episodes) "Father Knows Best," with Robert Young as father, is an Old Time Radio Situation Comedy, broadcast during the early to mid 1950s. Depicting the 'typical American' household, the radio show had a strong following and it went on very (I might add) successfully to television, becoming as popular as a 1950s and 1960s B/W TV sitcom, as was its radio counterpart! (NBC & CBS) Primarily sponsored by Maxwell House Coffee.... "Your father thinks it's the best (coffee),...

THE MAN CALLED X Beginning in the summer of 1944, at the height of World War II, The Man Called X was originally a kind of "FBI" program. The series soon developed a more international approach, however, featuring danger, intrigue, and romance in exotic settings. On any given Saturday or Sunday evening, Wendell Niles would say, "Wherever there is mystery, intrigue, romance, in all the strange and mysterious places of the world, there you will find "The Man Called X"....

HIGH ADVENTURE None of the Old Time Radio networks had a hold on romantic adventure like the Columbia Broadcasting System. The other networks certainly made the attempt to get a foot hold in the genre, but it would have been difficult for anyone to compete with The Whistler , Suspense , and Escape . High Adventure is sometimes billed "The Mutual Network's answer to Escape !" In fact, the Mutual anthology premiered on March 1, 1947. There were audition episodes for Escape at the end of...

ESCAPE In the Golden Days of Radio, back in the 1930s to the 1950s, most popular radio series had a set time for going out each week. Occasionally, there might be a change in the schedule, but on the whole a consistent time-slot was something that helped build a large audience and so was something the big networks aimed to achieve. One exception to this rule was the dramatic adventure anthology series called Escape , whose time-slot shifted an incredible eighteen times in its seven-year run...

X MINUS ONE X Minus One aired on NBC from 24 April 55 until 9 January 58 for a total of 124 episodes with one pilot or audition story. There was a revival of the series in 1973 when radio was attempting to bring back radio drama and it lasted until 1975. The show occupied numerous time slots through out its run in the 50's and thus was never able to generate a large following. X Minus One was an extension of Dimension X which aired on NBC from 1950-51. The first fifteen scripts used for X Minus...

The adventures of a beatnik, so cool that not even his own lynching blows his wig.  They call themselves the beat generation by which they do not mean defeated, they mean beatific which is to say blissful. They’re cool man, they’re way out there, they dig jazz which has no melody and poetry which makes no sense at least to the rest of us squares. They’re kids seeking an answer and to the beat generation the answer seems to be found in inaction, in non-feeling, they couldn’t care less....

This anthology was picked up for national syndication by the Mutual network and broadcast from mid-52 through mid-53. Written and directed by Richard Thorne, a prolific and talented writer and producer, this series is often overlooked, even by fans of OTR. It is unfortunate, since it provides some very unique and dramatic material; the acting in particular was superb. Early...

It is transnational in its sourcing with shows from From England, Canada and South Africa. Wherever I can find shows in English and the public domain also appropriately licensed audio recordings (Short story and poetry readings. Since there seems to be some interest in the show I have...

DR. KILDARE Dr. Kildare was produced for syndication in 1949 at WMGM , New York. It was based on the popular Dr. Kildare movies of the late 1930's and early 1940's, and brought to the microphone the stars of that series, Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore . Ayres played the young, idealistic Dr. James Kildare; Barrymore, ever in character, was the crusty, loveable diagnostician, Dr. Leonard Gillespie. The men worked at Blair General Hospital, "one of the great citadels of American medicine --...

RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE In 1945, Dick Powell portrayed Phillip Marlowe in the movie "Murder My Sweet" based on Raymond Chandler's novel "Farewell My Lovely". This was a radical departure in character for Mr. Powell from a Hollywood song and dance man to a hard-boiled detective. On June 11,1945, Lux Radio Theatre brought "Murder My Sweet" to radio, again with Dick Powell in the lead. These two performances prompted his selection for the part of Richard...

THE BIG SHOW In 1950, the advent of television was not only causing concern in the film industry but radio was beginning to feel the effect as well. In short, audiences were dwindling. To combat the problem, NBC spent lots of money to produce The Big Show , a 90 minute radio program which would feature famous guests performing skits, songs, and comedic routines. Tallulah Bankhead was asked to host the show. She had guested in various radio programs in the past but had never done anything on an...

The tape in box 18 had no information attached to the tape. Posts by dedicated listeners indicate it it from the 1953 period. There was a great deal of cross-talk on the original upload of this tape. Fortunately one of the other Toasters tape players has been able to create a better quality sound. We have some very adjustable heads. But as it says on our banner, this is Bob and Ray For The Truly Desperate! If you have any information about this file please post it in the Bob and Ray For The...
